I grew up in Ontario and graduated from Chaffey High School, so my roots in this community run deep. My wife and I decided to move back home from Los Angeles to raise our family somewhere safe, affordable, and where our kids would have space to grow up. Like so many of you, we chose Ontario Ranch, a new, rapidly growing part of the city where so much is possible.
For 13 years, I have built a career as a software engineer, where I have learned to fix and develop complex systems. Two years ago I realized we had a lack of coverage of what our City Council was doing for us, the Ontario residents, so I started the Citizens4Ontario account, where I provide fact-based updates on our city's budget and priorities. I am proud of that work, and now it is time to make transparency and accountability structural pillars of our local government.
In this capacity I have worked with non-profits and local groups across the region to grow civic engagement. I have also fought to bring attention to issues affecting our most vulnerable neighbors, including standing up for families impacted by ICE raids, and helping connect our community to valuable resources.
This map is made and maintained by the city of Ontario, and I am only adding it here for easier accesibility.
My name is Michael Rios and I would be honored to earn your vote for Ontario City Council to represent the newly formed District 3, which includes Ontario Ranch.
Ontario has some of the worst air quality in the nation, largely driven by the unchecked growth of warehouses and truck traffic. This issue was forced onto our doorsteps during the recent massive warehouse fire, which put our residents at direct risk from the blaze itself and choked our neighborhoods with hazardous smoke for weeks afterward. This overdevelopment and overinvestment of public funds in a warehouse economy has not only polluted our air but has also made our local roads more dangerous.
Growth is coming. The question is whether we manage that growth around warehouses and truck traffic, or around the families who actually live here. Two years ago our City Council supported the plan to raise our sales taxes with Measure Q. It passed, and now they are trying to raise sales taxes again this November with Measure H. We work hard to live here, and we need elected leaders fighting for our families, not for more warehouses and more truck traffic through our neighborhoods.
As your City Councilmember, I will fight to put working families first. I will focus on halting warehouse overdevelopment to protect our neighborhoods from harmful emissions and working to improve our air quality so our children and seniors can breathe clean air. Furthermore, I will support working families by ensuring our city's resources are invested in community well-being, good local jobs, and safe neighborhoods, rather than corporate giveaways. I will work to stop the reckless spending of our tax dollars, because I am running to make working families a priority in Ontario.
We need leadership that works for us, not corporate interests.
